The Granny Square Afghan is the project at the end of the Crochet for Beginners Video that anyone may do after watching the instructions in the video.  The Starter Kit does not include yarn for this project.

Crochet Hook:
US: #8 or H
Metric: #5 mm

Worsted Wool Yarn:
3 8 oz. (225 grams) balls - Color A (Beige)
4 8 oz. (225 grams) balls - Color B (Blue)
5 8 oz. (225 grams) balls - Color C (Burgundy)


Row 1:  With Color A form slip loop and Chain 4. Join with a slip stitch.

  • Chain 3

  • 2 double crochet into circle

  • Chain 1

  • 3 double crochet into circle

  • Chain 1

  • 3 double crochet into circle (repeat 2 times)

  • Join to top of Chain 3 with a slip stitch

  • slip stitch to nearest Chain 1 space

Row 2:  

  • Chain 3

  • 2 double crochet

  • Chain 1

  • 3 double crochet all in the same Chain 1 space

    • Move to next Chain 1 space

  • 3 double crochet

  • Chain 1

  • 3 double crochet all in the same Chain 1 space

  • 3 double crochet into circle (repeat 2 times) - 4 groups made

Join in top of Chain 2 with a slip stitch

  • slip stitch across to next Chain 1 space (this will be a corner).

 

Row 3:  Change to Color B

  • Chain 3

  • 2 double crochet

  • Chain 1

  • 3 double crochet all in the same Chain 2 space

    • 3 double crochet in next Chain 1 space

  • 3 double crochet in next Chain 1 space

  • Chain 1

  • 3 double crochet in the same space (another corner is made)

  • 3 double crochet into circle (repeat 2 times more)

  • Join top of Chain 3 with a slip stitch

  • Slip stitch over to nearest Chain 1 corner space.

Row 4:

  • Repeat row 3 except add an extra 3 double

  • crochet inside Chain 1 space.

Row 5:  Change to Color C

  • Repeat row 3 except add an extra 3 double

  • crochet in the side Chain 1 space.

Row 6:

  • Repeat row 3, except add an extra 3 double

  • crochet in the side Chain 1 space.

  • Join this row to the top of the Chain 3 with a slip stitch - cut yarn and pull end through loop - square is finished.

Sew in all loose ends and cut off extra yarn to make square look tidy.

Make 40 squares.

Sew together: 5 squares across

8 lines of 4 squares up.

Edging: single crochet around making 3 single crochet in each of the 4 corners.
