This is a very simple project that looks great when finished. It is a good beginner's project, so for the beginners, the instructions will be written out with the abbreviations provided also.

Size = 5 1/4 inches in diameter

Stitches used:  Chain, Single Crochet, Double Crochet, Slip Stitch

Materials:  4 ply Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn such as Sugar and Cream (one 2.5 oz ball will make several coasters), Size E crochet hook

NOTE: The reason for the slip stitches at the beginning of a row is so that you do not have an obvious line where the the rows are joined. Experienced crocheters may not need to do this, but I like the appearance it gives.

Chain (ch) 5. Join with a slip stitch (sl st) to form a ring.

ROW 1: 12 double crochet (dc) in ring. Join with slip stitch (sl st).

ROW 2: Chain (ch) 3. 2 double crochet (dc) in each stitch (st) around. Join with a slip stitch (sl st) . {24 double crochet (dc)}

ROW 3: Slip Stitch (sl st) in next 2 stitches (st)(see note). Chain (ch) 3 {counts as 1st double crochet (dc)}, double crochet (dc) in same stitch, double crochet (dc) in next stitch(st), *2 double crochet (dc) in next stitch(st), double crochet (dc) in next stitch (st). Repeat from * around. Join with a slip stitch (sl st) . {36 double crochet (dc)}

ROW 4: Slip Stitch (sl st) in next 3 stitches (st). Chain (ch) 3, double crochet (dc) in first stitch (st), double crochet (dc) in next stitch (st), 2 double crochet (dc) in next stitch(st), *double crochet (dc) in next 2 stitches(st), 2 double crochet (dc) in next stitch (st). Repeat from * around. Join with a slip stitch (sl st) .

ROW 5: (Last row) Double crochet (dc) in the 3rd stitch (st) from the hook, 6 more double crochet (dc) in the same space (sp). * Skip (sk) 2 stitches (st), single crochet (sc) in next stitch (st). Skip (sk) next 2 stitches (st). 7 double crochet (dc) in next stitch (st). Repeat from * around (7 more times). Skip (sk) next 2 stitches (st). Slip Stitch (sl st) in next stitch (st). Fasten off.
