Materials:
G/4.5mm hook
Two contrasting colours worsted weight yarn

Checkered Square Pattern Example

Make 9 mini granny squares; 5 in one colour (A), 4 in contrasting color (B).
Mini Granny:   Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.  Ch 3 (counts as hdc & ch1), (3hdc, ch1) in ring3 times, 2hdc; join with sl st to 2nd ch of first ch 3.
Ch 2, *3hdc in ch1 sp, hdc in next 3 hdc. Repeat from * 2 more times.   3hdc in next ch1 sp, hdc in next 2 hdc, join with sl st to back loops of top of 1st ch2.
Weave in ends of each square, and arrange upside down as follows:

Whip stitch squares together using back loops only.  Join colour B in any corner space; ch2, 2hdc in same space.  *(sc in next 5 sts, 2hdc in joining stitches of squares, sc in next 5sts, 2hdc in joining stitches of squares, sc in next 5 sts, 3hdc in corner st).  Repeat from * around square - at last corner st, join with sl st to top of ch2.  For Granny Square, finish off here.  For Hot Pad (shown in picture), ch1, (sl st in next st, ch1) around square, and sl st to 1st ch1.  Ch 10, sl st in same space and finish off.
