Curling Cables
Designed by:  Janet Rehfeldt
Website: Knitted Threads

7" square [7 1/2" square listed in brackets]

This square has cables formed by making a chain then working hdc stitches back up the chain.  It's a beautiful look that compliments any yarn.   [Correction to larger square of 25 working stitches posted 4/23/98.]

Materials:   Worsted Weight yarn
                     Size H crochet hook
Gauge:         3 dc = 1"

Note:   After your initial chain, this is Not a loose stitch, you may need to go to a G hook if you are a loosely tensioned crocheter.

Cable:  Chain 5, sl st into front of dc crochet two rows below, turn, hdc into each chain.  Do not skip the dc stitch behind the cable just made when continuing across the row.

Row 1:   Ch 25 [27] slightly loose, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Turn.  23 [25] sts.
Row 2:   Ch 3 [counts as first dc now and throughout], dc in each dc across.  Turn.
Row 3:   Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc [3 dc] sts, * ch 5, sl st into front of dc post 2 rows below, turn work, hdc into each ch.  Dc into the next 4 dc * rep. from * to * 4 times. [dc in last dc for 7 1/2” square], Turn.    23 dc   [25 dc], 5 cable curls.
Row 4:   Ch 3, dc in each dc across.  Turn.  23 [25] sts.
Row 5:   Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc [3 dc] sts, * ch 5, working to the right side of prev. cable, sl st into front of dc post 2 rows below located directly behind the prev. cable curl.  Turn work, hdc into each ch.  Dc into the next 4 dc *   rep. from
* to * 4 times. [dc in last dc for 7 1/2” square], Turn.    23 dc   [25 dc], 5 cable curls.

Repeat rows 4 and 5 until piece measured 7” [7 1/2”].

To edge your square, work sc sts around the square, working 23 [25] sc sts across each side, top and bottom with 3 sc sts in each corner.  Slip st into the first sc, fasten off.
