This potholder is made up of alternate rows
of single crochet stitches with front post double crochet stitches forming raised relief
stitch in the form of a tree or a Christmas Tree. The second layer or back of the
potholder is worked in half double crochet stitches making it work up quickly yet heavy
enough to be a useful and decorative piece. Try attaching a tiny star charm to the
top of the tree.
Materials: Worsted Weight Cotton 160 yds [3 oz] Green
1" wooden or plastic ring for hanging ; tiny star charm optional Size G [US] crochet
Gauge: 3.5
sc = 1"
Finished size: 9.25 by 7
NOTE: Always end each row with Ch 1 and turn.
Ch does Not count as the first st of the next row. Always begin each
row in the first st. Front piece will ripple slightly, but the potholder will lie
flat and even after attaching the back piece. |
Front Post Double Crochet; Fpdc: YO, insert
hook from front to back, to the front of the work, working around the stitch 1 row
below. YO, draw through loop, * YO draw through 2 loops on hook* repeat from *
to *once more.
Back Post Double Crochet; Bpdc: YO, insert
hook from back to front, to the back of the work, working around the stitch 1 row
below. YO, draw through loop, * YO draw through 2 loops on hook* repeat from *
to *once more.
Reverse Single Crocher; Rvsc: Working from
left to right insert hook in next st, YO, pull up loop, YO pull through both loops on
hook.
FRONT:
ROW 1: Ch 32, sc in 2nd ch from hook , sc in next 24 [26]chs.
Ch 1, Turn. 31sts
ROW 2: Sc in next 31 scs. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 3 to 5: Repeat row 2.
ROW 6: Sc in next 14 scs. Fpdc around next 3 scs of Row 5,
sc in next 14 scs. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 7: Sc in next 14 scs. Bpdc around next 3 fpdc, sc in
next 14 scs. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 8: Sc in next 4 sc. fpdc around next 10 scs of Row 7. Fpdc
in next 3 bpdcs, fpdc around next 10 scs of Row 6, sc in last 4 sc Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 9: Sc in next 4 sc, sc in next fpdc. Bpdc in next 21
fpdcs, sc in next fpdc, sc in last 4 sc Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 10: Sc in next 5 scs, sc in next bpdc. Fpdc in next 19 bpdcs,
sc in next bpdc, sc in next 5 scs. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 11: Sc in next 6 sc, sc in next fpdc. Bpdc in next 17 fpdcs.
Sc in next fpdc, sc in next 6 sc. Ch 1,Turn.
ROW 12: Sc in next 7 scs, sc in next bpdc. Fpdc in next 15 bpdcs,
sc in next bpdc, sc in next 7 scs. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 13: Sc in next 8 sc, sc in next fpdc. Bpdc in next 13 fpdcs,
sc in next fpdc, sc in next 8 sc. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 14: Sc in next 9 scs, sc in next bpdc. Fpdc in next 11 bpdcs, sc
in next bpdc, sc in next 9 scs. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 15: Sc in next 10 sc, sc in next fpdc. Bpdc in next 9 fpdcs, sc in
next fpdc, sc in next 10 sc. Ch 1,Turn.
ROW 16: Sc in next 11 scs, sc in next bpdc. Fpdc in next 7 bpdcs,
sc in next bpdc, sc in next 11 scs. Ch 1,Turn.
ROW 17: Sc in next 12 sc, sc in next fpdc. Bpdc in next 5 fpdcs,
sc in next fpdc, sc in next 12 sc. Ch 1,Turn.
ROW 18: Sc in next 13 scs, sc in next bpdc. Fpdc in next 3 bpdcs,
sc in next bpdc, sc in next 13 scs. Ch 1,Turn.
ROW 19: Sc in next 14 sc, sc in next fpdc. Bpdc in next fpdc, sc
in next fpdc, sc in next 14 sc. Ch 1,Turn.
ROW 20: Sc in next 15 scs, sc in next bpdc, sc in next 15 scs.
Ch 1,Turn.
ROW 21: Sc in next 31 scs. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 22 and 23: Ch, sc in next 31 scs. Fasten off. Using thread,
securely attach tiny star charm to the top of the tree if desired.
BACK:
ROW 1: Ch 33, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Ch 1, Turn. 31sts
ROW 2: Hdc in next 31 hdcs. Ch 1, Turn.
ROW 3 to 19: Repeat row 2. do not fasten off.
Pick up front piece and pin to back piece with wrong sides together and right sided facing
you. With the Christmas tree facing you, Ch 1, rev. sc in last hdc made on the
back piece. Evenly work rsc around the pot holder working 19 sts along the side, 2
sts in the corner, 30 sts along the bottom, 2 sts in the corner, 19 sts up the opposite
side 2 sts in the corner, and 30 sts along the top of potholder. rsc in same st as beg.
rsc made, sl st in first rsc to close. If adding loop do not fasten off.
Loop:
For wooden ring: Work one sc st around the ring. Sl st in base of
sc. Fasten off. Secure ring to potholder and weave in ends.
For plastic ring: Sc around the ring until ring is full, approx 18 to
19 sc sts. Sl st in base of first sc. Fasten off. Secure ring to
potholder and weave in ends.
Crocheted loop: Ch 9, sc in each ch. Bring sc
strip down to potholder and sl st to last sc made. Fasten off. Secure loop and
weave in ends.
